Could Arizona Expand the Number of Women in its Congressional Delegation?

Primary elections were held on Tuesday in Arizona. Full results for women candidates in federal and statewide executive races are available on this post on our Election Analysis page; there are two undecided races featuring women candidates, so this post will be updated once those contests are decided.

• Incumbent Governor Katie Hobbs (D-AZ) was unopposed in the Democratic primary for governor. While her general election contest is rated as “Lean Democrat” by Cook Political Report, Hobbs is currently considered the most vulnerable incumbent woman governor running for re-election in 2026.
• Incumbent Attorney General Kris Mayes (D-AZ) was unopposed in the Democratic primary. 
• Women are 4 of 14 (28.6%) major-party nominees for statewide elective executive office in Arizona, including 4 of 8 (50%) Democrats and 0 of 6 (0%) Republicans. 
• Current State Treasurer, Kimberly Yee (R-AZ), remains in a contest that is too close to call for superintendent of public instruction. If successful, she will face Teresa Leyba Ruiz (D-AZ) in an all-woman general election contest.
• Women are 6 of 17 (35.3%) major-party nominees for U.S. House in Arizona, including 6 of 8 (75%) Democrats and 0 of 9 (0%) Republicans. One (1D) woman remains in a race that is too close to call in Arizona’s first congressional district.
• Both (2D) incumbent women in the U.S. House from Arizona were unopposed in their primary elections and are strongly favored to win re-election in November. 
• JoAnna Mendoza (D), who was unopposed in the Democratic primary in Arizona’s 6th Congressional District, will challenge incumbent U.S. Representative Juan Ciscomani (R) in a general election contest currently rated as a toss up by Cook Political Report.
• The remaining three women nominees for U.S. House races are in contests that strongly favor their opponents.
