Launching the CAWP Gender & Politics Research Hub

The Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP), a unit of the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University, is proud to launch the CAWP Gender & Politics Research Hub, a new resource for understanding the most relevant modern research on women in American politics and how that research can be applied to transform our government. The CAWP Gender & Politics Research Hub will serve as both a knowledge repository and an online meeting place for scholars, political practitioners, media, and the general public who share an interest in how the country is progressing toward gender equity in politics. This Hub will lift up the important work of other scholars and experts in this field, as well as continue to share CAWP research.

The CAWP Gender & Politics Research Hub will have two principal products released in phases: first, an overview inventory of the status of research on gender and politics and, second, regularly-updated translation of new and timely research in the field. The goals of the Hub are to:

  • Distill and translate research findings for easier use by practitioners, public, and media.
  • Facilitate the communication of the latest research findings to political practitioners to promote research-driven strategies and minimize duplication of research efforts.
  • Provide a platform for practitioners to share on-the-ground insights that will ensure practice-informed research.
  • Foster relationships and dialogue between and among researchers, practitioners, media, and funders.

“The CAWP Gender & Politics Research Hub is the culmination of CAWP’s decades of leadership in this field of scholarship,” said CAWP Director of Research Kelly Dittmar. “We have long worked to build bridges between scholars of gender and politics and political practitioners, elevating the work of both and identifying opportunities for collaboration. This is an opportunity to create, by virtue of connecting our disparate collaborators and audiences, new dynamism and momentum in accelerating the progress of women’s political equality.”

With today’s phase-one launch, CAWP’s Research Inventory on Gender & Politics is now live. The research inventory provides eleven thematic overviews of current and past research, with particular emphasis on the latest findings, in the field of women and U.S. politics. These overviews capture the state of knowledge in each research area to increase understanding of current political realities, support research-based interventions, and generate future research questions and agendas.

In the coming months, CAWP will launch phase two of the project and begin the Research Translation work of the Gender & Politics Research Hub, which will include written, video, and graphical content that highlights, summarizes, and synthesizes the latest research in gender and U.S. politics for diverse, non-academic audiences in ways that clarify its relevance to present-day political strategies and interventions.

Additionally, the CAWP Gender & Politics Research Hub will serve as a foundation upon which CAWP will facilitate in-person or virtual research briefings and conversations among stakeholders and experts, promoting the relationship-building and information-sharing that is so central to CAWP’s mission and the goals of the Hub.

What does this mean for you?

As a journalist with an interest in women’s political representation and how gender and race shape political participation, campaigning, and officeholding, the Gender & Politics Research Hub will build upon the resources already available from CAWP and provide insights into the most current scholarship on gender and politics and the scholarship most relevant to real-world events. The Hub will deliver opportunities to discover new avenues of potential coverage and gain knowledge about the latest research in the field and the scholars around the world doing that research.
